MARQUETTE PARK, Grand Blvd. between Hemlock and Montgomery Sts., bordering Lake Michigan at the eastern limits of Gary, is dedicated to the memory of Pére Jacques Marquette, French Jesuit missionary and explorer, who passed through this region in 1673. Standing in a landscaped area is a heroic-sized bronze STATUE OF MARQUETTE, which depicts him advancing, holding aloft the Cross. The park, a 133-acre tract, has excellent bathing and other recreational facilities.
The PUBLIC LIBRARY (open Monday-Thursday noon-8 Friday & Saturday 10am-5pm), 220 W. 5th Ave., contains a large collection of books of interest to steel workers, most of them for readers with less than high school education. There is also an excellent metallurgical reference library. Phone: (219) 886-2484 Fax: (219) 886-6829
