Belgium is a small patchwork country with a population density that is one of the highest in the world and with only the Ardennes as a stretch of romantic landscape. The people live a very 20th century kind of life and yet the Bruges is one of the world's few places where a medieval landscape is intact and unspoiled. The patchwork quality is further emphasized by conflict between the Flemish and French speaking parts of the country (with French speking Brussels as an officially bi-lingual buffer zone). The country has been invaded and ruled by outsiders many times.

Temperate if somewhat unreliable. May through September are suggested as the best times to visit Belgium.

Both French and Flemish are official languages, depending on the part of the country. Some German spoken, particularly in Brussels. Some people speak English. The predominant religion in Belgium is Catholic.
